I’ve been photographing immigration issues ever since I moved back to the United States in 2008, after living 17 years abroad. I think that my time away gave me some perspective on other cultures – and hopefully some on my own.

One moment that both impacted and shocked me was at a Tea Party rally outside the Arizona State Legislature in July 2010. While protected by a line of police officers, some members of the group were yelling racial slurs at a group of Latino immigrants and their kids and telling them to “go home.” One woman was wearing an “I Heart USA” t-shirt while saying some of the ugliest things to these families.

Unfortunately, we hear some of the same things in today’s political debate. Sadly, that photo is even more relevant today than it was then.
