Table tennis is a very fast-paced sport that is played in a confined space, and we are constantly looking for an artistic view of the action and reaction.
Attention to detail is also important when covering table tennis with an emphasis on the focal point being the player’s eyes.
This image [below] was taken as Jun Mizutani of Japan competed against Hugo Calderano of Brazil during Round 4 of the Men’s Singles Table Tennis match:
It captures the intensity of Jun and eliminates the clutter and busy backgrounds at the Olympic venue.
This shot [below] utilizes the Rio and Olympic branding to give the image a sense of place. The table tennis venue is very busy and cluttered visually. We try to find unique angles and “keyholes” that allow us to isolate the athlete and clean up the busy backgrounds. This photo is my favorite from the Rio preview coverage:
