“I think the photographer has to view the show as if they were in the audience in order to find the right moment.”

As the official image partner of IMG Fashion, Getty Images has the ultimate backstage pass to the Fashion Week runways, models and parties. Our photographers cover shows all around the globe, creating a visual history of fashion, culture and celebrity in which worlds collide.

They have seen it all, but there are always certain moments that stick out more than others. Here is a sampling of some of our photographers’ favorite pictures from the past year in fashion.

1. Larry Busacca

Based in: New York

Favorite moment: Lela Rose show, New York

“I like the play between the model and the audience in this image. The runway and seating were fairly close to each other with the models practically brushing against the audience with their clothing. I tried to capture the flow and dance between the two.”

2. Vittorio Zunino Celotto

Based in: Milan

Favorite moment: Roberto Cavalli show, Milan

“I took this picture at the end of the show. I usually try to create something different and, personally, I think the photographer has to view the show as if they were in the audience in order to find the right moment. This picture made the cover of an English newspaper, which isn’t typical of a fashion image, so I was really proud of that.”

3. Jamie McCarthy

Based in: New York

Favorite moment: Marc Jacobs show, New York

“Nicki was backstage at Marc Jacobs and she wanted her assistant to take her photo with the models on her cell phone but she was too shy to ask. I walked up to her and said ‘I’ll take you over and shoot it, don’t be shy.’ She giggled and walked over and we took the photo. I thought it was cute.”

4. Melodie Jeng

Based in: New York

Favorite moment: Outside 3.1 Phillip Lim show, New York

“This image is from after the 3.1 Phillip Lim show. The girls were all wearing Phillip Lim and also have great personalities, which make for great photos. I love photographing people genuinely having fun—it makes my job fun as well.”

 5. Mike Coppola

Based in: New York

Favorite moment: Tommy Hilfiger show, New York

“I took this picture of Irene Kim after the Tommy Hilfiger show. I positioned her right in front of the lights so that she would have that glow around her.  I also loved the fact that her dress matched the colors in the endzone–it was a perfect storm.”

6. Neilson Barnard

Based in: New York

Favorite moment: Lie Sangbong show, New York

“This was possibly the most beautiful show of last season. I like the sense of floating.”

7. Timur Emek

Based in: Berlin & New York

Favorite moment: Outside Hermes show, Paris

“This perfectly depicts the chaos that occurs on the streets each Fashion Week — it’s both a blessing and a curse. Without my colleagues and this environment, it wouldn’t feel like Paris Fashion Week. I also love this picture because it shows the fun connection I have with Chiara Ferragni.”

8. Gareth Cattermole

Based in: London

Favorite moment: Streets of London

I think some of the best images from Fashion Weeks happen outside the venues, as the guests and the fashion crowd are extremely interesting. To me, it seems that outside of the venues there is a lot more room to work — and the backgrounds are always changing. I like taking quick portraits of people who catch my eye, and this gentleman is a perfect example. I used a corner wall at Somerset House before a show — he only stood there for about 10 seconds but the light was perfect. There is a very different feel to Fashion Week on the street rather than backstage and runway. Fashion is really “on the street” at Fashion Weeks!
