As we release our Year in Focus e-book highlighting the best photography from 2014, we ask our experts across the business for their personal selection from the year.
UK Entertainment Manager Julia Galleway gives us her pick of best images from 2014 and the stories behind them:
Caption: (L-R) David Furnish, Lara Stone, Sir Elton John and David Walliams pose for a photo as they attend the Woodside End of Summer party to benefit the Elton John AIDS Foundation sponsored by Chopard and Grey Goose at Woodside on September 4, 2014 in Windsor, England.
This picture was taken by Gareth Cattermole at the Woodside End of Summer Party. It was the first year Getty Images had worked directly with the EJAF and also the first year they held such a party. It was formerly known as the ‘White Tie and Tiara Ball,’ but the foundation wanted to create a less formal and more intimate environment for their guests. Elton and David’s children are rarely seen, so it was a treat to see them.
I love the picture because it feels gentle and relaxed; it could almost be any party but that we recognize Elton, David their children and celebrity guests.

Burberry is the show piece of London Fashion week. There are many things to look forward to with this show, the fashion, but also the ‘of the minute’ models with this year’s runway offering being Suki Waterhouse and Jordan Dunn. Aside from what we see on the runway, the Burberry front row is always impressive, and one can expect the entertainment elite to grace the seats. Poppy and Cara Delevingne, Paloma Faith, Kate Moss and Mario Testino were amongst the big names this year.
Caption: Seven-time Grammy winner Taylor Swift on the fifth night of the European leg of her blockbuster The RED Tour with the fourth of five sold-out shows at London’s O2 Arena, playing to a capacity crowd of more than 15,500 fans, on February 10, 2014 in London, England.
Taylor Swift is a ‘force du jour’ and I love this shot. It was taken at one of her UK shows for the RED tour and shot by Dave Hogan. Shooting music/concert photography can be challenging for any number of reasons, but her shows are always very visual and as an artist, she is animated and energetic as this picture shows.
Caption: Dancers perform on the opening night of ‘Monty Python Live (Mostly)’ on July 1, 2014 in London, England.
Monty Python or ‘The Pythons’ as they are known by fans, performed a series of shows this year at the O2 and Getty Images covered exclusively. I love this picture because it shows in silhouette one of the funny walks Monty Python are famed for.
Caption: James Corden and Nick Grimshaw kiss at The BRIT Awards 2014 at 02 Arena on February 19, 2014 in London, England.
The BRITS had an amazing line up this year with performers ranging from the likes of Beyonce to Katy Perry and Ellie Goulding, but sometimes it is not these amazing pictures that people end up looking at. I watched the BRITS in February, and when this happened, I knew that if our photograpers had managed to get the frame, it would be a key picture for next day papers…and it most certainly was. A great BRITS moment.
Caption: Lily Allen attends the EE British Academy Film Awards 2014 at The Royal Opera House on February 16, 2014 in London, England.
BAFTA is the major British film awards which takes place in February. Lily Allen had been out of the spotlight, and BAFTA was the first time she had really been seen at an event in an official capacity for a while. It was great to see her on the carpet, sporting a very interesting head piece and looking stunning!
Caption: Cara Delevingne attends the GQ Men of the Year awards at The Royal Opera House on September 2, 2014 in London, England.
GQ is a fabulous carpet; it always has a great attending list which plays very well in the papers. Whilst Cara Delevingne attends a good deal of events she is definitely the model ‘of the moment’ and always looks great. She seems ‘in character’ in this frame, and I love the mouth accessory and dramatic lipstick, but it’s the intense eye line that makes this picture for me.
Caption: Kate Moss, Suki Waterhouse, Cara Delevingne, Sienna Miller, Naomi Campbell attend a private dinner celebrating the Global Launch of the ‘Kate Moss for TopShop Collection’ at The Connaught Hotel on April 29, 2014 in London, England.
This was a great celebrity and fashion event, with some of our best-loved models in attendance. A very cool group of ladies looking like they are having quite a nice time, so the shot is very natural, which I like. Celebrities are very familiar with Dave Benett, and it’s because of this he manages to capture relaxed, candid moments.
Caption: Prince Harry waits backstage as he prepares to give a speech to the crowds at the Invictus Games Closing Ceremony during the Invictus Games at Queen Elizabeth park on September 14, 2014 in London, England.
This shot was taking at the closing ceremony of Prince Harry’s Invictus Games and is part of a backstage feature by Royal Photographer Chris Jackson. The picture shows Harry side of the stage, just before giving his closing speech and to me the emotion of the moment is palatable.
Caption: The Edge, Bono, Larry Mullen Jr. and Adam Clayton of U2 perform at the MTV EMA’s 2014 at The Hydro on November 9, 2014 in Glasgow, Scotland.
Getty Images is the house photographer for MTV EMA – it’s always a huge show with spectacular effects, costume changes and fanfare. This picture shot by US photographer Kevin Mazur captures U2’s performance of ‘Breaking Wave’. The spectacle of the whole show paused to make way for a very emotional and what felt like a very naked performance, from U2. The lighting and staging was stripped back to allow the fans to focus on what was a show stopping moment and this picture perfectly captures that.
